Cowboys used as leverage? Deion reveals no substance to coach rumors

Cowboys Hall-of Fame cornerback and current Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has put an end to lingering speculation about his reported interest in the Dallas head coaching vacancy, saying the rumors were never legitimate in the first place.

Just over a year ago, the Cowboys were in the midst of parting with head coach Mike McCarthy after a five-year run which included three straight 12-5 seasons sandwiched in-between two losing seasons. After a brief search focused primarily on candidates with ties to the organization, the Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in franchise history.

Reports confirmed that Sanders spoke with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fueling speculations that “Coach Prime” could make the jump from college football to the NFL. However, no formal interview ever took place.

Sanders explained that while he enjoyed playing in the NFL during his legendary career, coaching at the professional level does not appeal to him. He noted that the NFL is “a different game” and reiterated that is passion remains in developing young athletes a the college level.

“I’m focused on winning and getting these kids through college so they have degrees, and they’re able to attain tremendous professions even after football is over,” Sanders told FOS. “But I have no thought process of the NFL whatsoever.” – Deion Sanders to FOS

Shortly after the flirtation, Sanders signed a five-year, $54 million deal with the Buffaloes making Sanders one of college football’s highest paid coaches.

For now, “Prime Time” appears fully invested in Colorado, making it clear that the much-0discussed Cowboys flirtation was more media speculation than reality.
