Cristiano Ronaldo saw his 2026 World Cup journey end earlier this month after Portugal suffered late heartbreak against Spain.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory in the Round of 16 and ended Ronaldo’s hopes of winning the competition for the first time.
The defeat immediately raised more questions about the 41-year-old’s future.
Ronaldo confirmed that it had been his final World Cup.
However, he stopped short of announcing his retirement from Portugal duty.
The former Manchester United star said he would speak with his family before making a final decision.
Reports later suggested that Ronaldo could continue until Euro 2028.
Spain went on to reach the final and defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time.
Former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal as Argentina failed to defend the trophy they won in Qatar four years earlier.
That result denied Lionel Messi and Lisandro Martinez another World Cup title following a tournament in which their side has faced several accusations online.
FIFA accused of being ‘corrupt’
Cristiano Ronaldo has now attracted attention after liking an Instagram post which contained extreme allegations about FIFA and Argentina.
The post came from Spanish television programme Espejo Publico.
Journalist Pilar Rodriguez Losantos claimed Argentina should have exited the tournament several matches earlier.
She alleged that FIFA had helped the defending champions and described the organisation as one of the most corrupt institutions in the world.
The journalist also claimed FIFA wanted to hand Messi another World Cup, as she believes happened in Qatar in 2022.
Contributor Ruben Amon then described FIFA as “mafia-like” and “shameful” organisation.
He also criticised ticket prices and argues that the World Cup fan experience had become accessible only to wealthy supporters.
The Instagram reel generated more than 2.8 million plays and over 228,000 likes.
Ronaldo’s verified account appeared among those which had liked the post.
The interaction quickly sparked debate among supporters because of Ronaldo’s long-running sporting rivalry with Messi.
Some fans interpreted the like as frustration following Portugal’s elimination and Argentina’s run to the final.
However, Ronaldo has not publicly endorsed the specific allegations or explained why he liked the post.
