Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has refused to rule Dani Carvajal out of his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite concerns over the defender’s fitness and lack of game time.
The experienced Real Madrid captain suffered a right foot injury during training last week, raising doubts about his availability for the tournament.
Speaking to reporters, De la Fuente described Carvajal as an important figure within the national team setup and revealed he recently spoke with the veteran defender.
“Carvajal is a very important figure in our dressing room,” De la Fuente said.
“I actually spoke with him yesterday, so I’m aware of what’s going on. He doesn’t have a specific injury, nothing serious, but he needs time to get back to his usual level.”
The Spain coach explained that Carvajal must now prove his fitness and performances in the remaining matches before the final World Cup squad is announced.
“We’ll see in the remaining matches whether he truly gets the opportunity and delivers the performances,” he added.
Carvajal, 34, has endured a difficult season at Real Madrid with limited appearances due to increased competition from Trent Alexander Arnold.
The experienced full back also made just one appearance for Spain in 2025, further increasing uncertainty over his place in the squad.
Despite the challenges, De la Fuente suggested Carvajal would understand any decision taken regarding World Cup selection.
Spain will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on June 15 before facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
The tournament will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
