CHICAGO – Casey Mize needs another stint on the injured list.
The Detroit Tigers placed the 29-year-old right-hander on the 15-day injured list Friday, May 29, before their game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field, retroactive to Thursday. The Tigers are replacing him with right-handed reliever Beau Brieske.
Mize isn’t eligible to return from the injured list until June 12. He recently missed 17 days with the same injury.
Meanwhile, Brieske returned from the 60-day injured list, where he was sidelined with a left adductor strain. The Tigers need to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Brieske’s return.
The Tigers need a starter to fill Mize’s spot in the rotation for Monday’s series opener on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays. Right-hander Ty Madden (right forearm contusion) is eligible to return Sunday from the injured list after one rehab start for Triple-A Toledo, making him a candidate to start Monday.
