ARLINGTON, Texas — First baseman Carlos Santana, who appeared to be nearing a return from the injured list, had a setback during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno, manager Torey Lovullo said.
Santana “felt a twinge” in the same right adductor/groin area that landed him on the injured list last month. Lovullo said the initial belief is that it is an aggravation of the same injury.
“We pulled him back and he’s in Arizona right now getting reevaluated,” Lovullo said.
The club had been tentatively planning to reinstate him from the injured list during their three-game set in Texas, which begins on Monday evening, May 11, at Globe Life Field.
Santana, 40, has played in only eight games this season, going 2 for 24 (.083) with a double, two walks and eight strikeouts.
He had been likely to return in a reserve role, with veteran Ildemaro Vargas expected to continue to get the majority of the starts at first base, along with Jose Fernandez.
