District 3 Class 3A baseball: Kutztown beats Wyomissing; Berks Catholic advances

Elliot Knutsen and Chris Bergstrom combined on a five-hitter as Kutztown beat Wyomissing 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 3A baseball tournament on Monday.

The fourth-seeded Cougars (14-7) advance to play top-seeded Bermudian Springs (18-2) in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Bermudian Springs.

Bergstrom and Zane Cherrie were each 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Kutztown.

Ryan Walters and Chase Schuler also knocked in runs and each had one one hit.

Knutsen pitched four innings, allowing three hits, walking four and striking out three. Bergstrom struck out seven and allowed one earned run.

Wyomissing finishes the season 11-9. Ryan Graham had two hits for the Spartans.

In the other 3A quarterfinal game on Monday, third-seeded Berks Catholic defeated sixth-seeded Pequea Valley 5-3 as Victor Mejia tripled and drove in three runs.

Henry Pflomm pitched the first four innings for the Saints (15-5) giving up seven hits and two runs, one of them unearned. Freshman Austin Acevedo pitched the last three innings, allowing one hit, one unearned run and striking out four.

Pflomm and Gio DiSabatino each had a hit and an RBI for the Saints.

Berks Catholic plays at second-seeded Trinity (16-4) at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Bermudian Springs and Trinity had byes into the semifinals. The championship game is Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Penn Medicine Park in Lancaster.
