There may not be a more loyal fan base than that of the Philadelphia Eagles. There are, however, some topics of conversation that split them right down the middle. Mekhi Becton is one of those discussions. All believe that he played his tail off during his one-and-done affair in the City of Brotherly Love. Some think that era should be left behind and remembered fondly, while others seem puzzled by the fact that, since his most recent ‘one-and-done’, one with the Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia’s public actions suggest they are not interested in a reunion.
The Eagles have spent years building one of the NFL’s premier offensive lines, but even elite units eventually require maintenance, reinforcements, and difficult conversations about depth. That’s why the idea of a reunion with Mekhi Becton refuses to completely disappear. Arguments can be made that he makes sense as a bargain signing.
The Eagles saw the best version of Mekhi Becton, and some think a reunion makes sense
Recently, Sports Illustrated’s Eva Geitheim suggested Philadelphia should consider bringing the former Eagles guard back into the fold despite his disappointing 2025 campaign. On the surface, the idea feels risky. Dig deeper, however, and it becomes easier to understand why the suggestion continues surfacing. After all, the Eagles already know exactly what Becton looks like when things are working.
Becton’s lone season in Philadelphia during 2024 arguably represented the best football of his professional career. After transitioning from tackle to right guard, he became a massive part of the Eagles’ physical offensive identity and helped stabilize the interior during a championship run. His size, power, and movement ability fit beautifully within Philadelphia’s downhill rushing attack. The following season with the Chargers told a much different story. Injuries and inconsistent play derailed his momentum, eventually leading to his release and reigniting questions that have followed him throughout much of his NFL career.
Talent has never been the concern. Availability, consistency, and fit usually become the larger conversations. Still, Eagles fans already witnessed firsthand how effective Becton can be when placed in the right environment.
Philadelphia’s offensive line picture entering 2026 feels slightly less stable than it once did. Lane Johnson and Landon Dickerson both flirted with retirement earlier in the offseason. Dickerson and Cam Jurgens are also returning from lingering injuries that impacted stretches of last season. Meanwhile, Tyler Steen performed admirably at right guard but did not consistently provide the same level of dominance Becton flashed during his best moments in Philadelphia.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the Eagles should hand Becton a starting job. It does, however, strengthen the argument for adding experienced insurance along the interior offensive line. The biggest obstacle to a reunion may simply be money. If Becton still views himself as a high-end starter deserving significant compensation, Philadelphia likely won’t entertain the conversation for long. The Eagles also have young offensive linemen they would prefer to continue developing under new offensive line coach Chris Kuper. That last detail matters too.
Jeff Stoutland received enormous praise for helping resurrect Becton’s career in Philadelphia, and it remains unclear whether lightning could strike twice without him overseeing the project. Still, championship-caliber teams constantly search for worthwhile gambles, particularly along the offensive line. If Becton’s market softens enough, the Eagles may eventually decide the risk is worth revisiting one more time.
