Early works begin on Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic stadium at Victoria Park

Early works for Brisbane’s new Olympic stadium at Victoria Park have begun, the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) confirmed on 1 June 2026.

GIICA has taken possession of the site to start preparatory activities that will lead to the construction of the venue, which is set to host the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as athletics events, during the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

According to the authority, these early activities represent a significant step forward in the development of key sporting venues for Brisbane.

Brisbane’s Olympic stadium will seat 63,000 spectators and can host up to 70,000 for concerts. After the Games, it is expected to become the city’s main venue for sports and entertainment.

The authority stated that delivery of the project remains on schedule, with design work progressing and the Early Contractor Involvement process under way.

A recent referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act was deemed “not a controlled action” in May, meaning no further Commonwealth environmental approvals are currently required for the precinct.

The contract for Brisbane’s Olympic stadium’s early works is expected to be awarded in the coming months. Major earthworks are scheduled to begin between late 2026 and early 2027.

Initial works starting this month will focus on site preparation. This includes ongoing investigations, early enabling tasks, partial demolition of existing infrastructure, and setting up construction zones on the Herston side of the park.

As these works progress, GIICA has confirmed a series of changes affecting traffic and public access in the area.

Several sections of Victoria Park on the Herston side have been closed off and fenced to create designated construction zones. Access points from both the Herston and Kelvin Grove busway stations have also been shut.

In addition, Gilchrist Avenue is now closed to public vehicles, and the North Brisbane Bikeway has been diverted via a minor re-route. Visitors in the area can expect temporary traffic management and increased signage to support safe movement around the site.

Despite these changes, GIICA has indicated that the Pump Track, York’s Hollow North Brisbane Bikeway, and some open green space will continue to be accessible to the public during this phase of works.
