The Montreal Victoire took home the 2026 PWHL Walter Cup last week, turning one of the league’s queerest teams into hockey playoff champs.
Not only do the Victoires have seven queer plates, but their win against the Ottawa Charge marked the first time wives lifted the cup in the air together. Marie-Philip Poulin, AKA “Captain Clutch,” was not only named the playoff MVP, but scored the team’s first-ever Walter Cup win with wife Laura Stacey playing by her side.
The NHL may be struggling to beat the homophobia wrap and still not have a single out LGBTQ+ in 2026, but the Professional Women’s Hockey League doesn’t have the same problem. The league prides itself on being inclusive, and almost every team in the league has multiple queer players.
The PWHL is still in it’s infancy, which means that there have only been three Walter Cup winning teams so far — the Minnesota Frost won in 2024 and 2025 — but there have already been 10 lesbian and sapphic players to hoist that cup in the air.

Much like Michela Cava, Liz Schepers is also a two-time Walter Cup Champion, having been part of both of the Frost’s winning seasons. The star forward is now part of the Boston Fleet.
Marie-Philip Poulin
