Ex-Rams CB says LA ‘wasted’ pick on Ty Simpson, calls him ‘future backup’

Not everyone was a fan of the Los Angeles Rams’ decision to draft Ty Simpson in the first round. You can certainly count former NFL cornerback Aqib Talib among those who disliked the pick by the Rams.

On “The Arena: Gridiron” Friday, Talib ripped the Rams for having the “worst draft” after Round 1, criticizing the team by saying it “wasted” the 13th pick on Simpson in the first round.

Like many others, Talib argues that the Rams should’ve stayed in win-now mode and tried to find a player who could help them right away, not a quarterback who may not play for a couple of years.

“If I’m Sean, if I’m Les, who can help me beat Seattle right now? And I don’t think they did that. They wasted the 13th pick with a future backup, in my opinion,” he said.

Talib mentioned Makai Lemon as someone they should’ve targeted. He also thought the Rams should’ve considered tackle Monroe Freeling at No. 13 after seeing Rob Havenstein retire. Kenyon Sadiq was another player Talib pointed to as someone who could’ve helped the Rams run 12 personnel and 13 personnel “all damn day long.”

Instead, they addressed the future and took Simpson, who they believe can take the reins when Matthew Stafford retires.
