Michigan football has been on a tear on the recruiting trail, but just had a whiff on an in-state candidate.
Myles Smith, a four-star edge from Farmington, chose Indiana over Michigan, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kentucky when he announced his decision on Thursday, May 28, from the media room at his high school.
Smith, who stands 6 feet 5 and 215 pounds, is the No. 7 player in Michigan in the class of 2027, the No. 23 edge in the nation and the No. 246 overall player in the country, per 247Sports composite rankings.
He shows up making plays both in the ground game and in pass rush in his highlight film on his recruiting profile, recording sacks, batting passes, tackling runners in the backfield, forcing fumbles and altering the game as a physical presence. He will have to put on weight to play edge at the next level, but he has plenty of room to grow into his body.
Smith had previously been reported to have upcoming visits with Michigan State (May 29), Missouri (June 6), Kentucky (June 12) and Michigan (June 19), and it’s not immediately clear which he will take, if any.
Michigan, which entered Thursday with the No. 11 overall class in the nation, has pledges along the defensive line from four-star Recarder Kitchen (Muskegon), four-star Xavier Muhammad (South Houston) and four-star Jayce Brewer (Indianapolis).
Michigan still has 15 commits in its 2027 class with official visit season just around the corner.
