Former Real Madrid manager believes the club must sign a new midfielder this summer — “It’s not easy”

Real Madrid ended their 2025/26 season with a 4-2 win over Athletic Club. But it did little to change fortunes for a team that failed to win a single major trophy and finished behind Barcelona in the league table.

The final match saw Dani Carvajal and David Alaba wave goodbye to the Real Madrid fans, while Alvaro Arbeloa, even in his last game as manager, refused to hold a press conference.

This leaves Madrid with a lot to do in the upcoming summer transfer window, particularly when it comes to reinforcements in key positions.

Fabio Capello believes Real Madrid need a midfielder

In a recent interaction, legendary Italian manager Fabio Capello has already identified a problem area for Real Madrid that needs fixing in the summer transfer window.

Speaking at a recent event, the former Real Madrid boss was direct in his assessment of what the club must prioritise.

“It hasn’t been an easy season for Real Madrid. We need to understand what the future holds. The most important thing is to understand where the good players are and where the team is failing, where players are missing.

“And then, try to sign them. It’s not easy, you know,” Capello said (h/t Defensa Central).

He then identified the midfield as the area requiring the most urgent attention.

“What changes would I make at Real Madrid? In midfield, which is where they need to find players like Modric and others, like Kroos.

“These players are fundamental because of their quality and tactical intelligence. That’s where we’ve been lacking a bit these past few years.”

Who does Real Madrid want?

In order to fix the midfield problem, Real Madrid have been linked with a few midfielders, including Enzo Fernandez, Rodri and Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand.

Enzo seems out of reach due to his price tag, but Rodri is reportedly interested in joining the club, especially after Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Hjulmand is an interesting option, liked by coach Jose Mourinho and could be a cost-effective alternative.
