SHIPPENSBURG — Four Fulton County athletes and a relay team competed on Day 2 of the PIAA Track and Field Championships, Saturday, May 23, at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.

Southern Fulton sophomore Julia Madison led the way, finishing with a bronze medal in the girls 2A 800-meter. She turned in a time of 2:15.43.

“I have to take the wins where they are,” said Madison. “My parents, my coaches and everyone around me always tell me, ‘You need to take your wins.’ I think in this moment I will take the win because I got on the podium. I didn’t get the PR that I wanted. I ran hard and I really tried. I got third and I still have junior and senior year, so I am excited. If I can do it now, I can definitely do it then.”

Madison, who won her second straight District 5-2A title this season, wanted to come back to Shippensburg with a bit of a vengeance after finishing 14th in the race as a freshman.

She did just that, despite the unruly cold and rainy conditions.

“My first lap, it felt kind of smooth, but at the same the cold makes you feel like you are going fast when you really aren’t,” Madison said. “I am excited to get third and I am excited for the future.”

Madison’s teammate Teagan Ritz ran a 2:00.64 in the boys 2A 800 meters. The senior finished in 24th place.

The Southern Fulton 3200-meter relay team of Ritz, George Hardy, Parker Oakman and Viliamu Ah Loe finished in 24th place, turning in a time of 8:38.96.

McConnellsburg junior Braydon Mumma cleared 12 feet, 6 inches in the 2A boys pole fault. He took 20th in the competition. Meanwhile, McConnellsburg junior Hoyt Glenn jumped 38 feet, 7 inches to take 25th in the 2A boys triple jump.
