Giants not likely to honor 1986 Super Bowl champs during season opener

The New York Giants plan on celebrating and honoring the 1986 team that won Super Bowl XXI sometime this season, as it is the 40th anniversary of the first Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

They won’t likely be doing that in Week 1, when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football to open the season.

The reason? The game will be played two days after the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. There will be enough time to recognize the 1986 team and have a proper remembrance for 9/11.

The 1986 team will likely be honored during another home game, perhaps against Washington or San Francisco, the two teams they defeated on their way to Super Bowl XXI, a 38-20 victory over the Denver Broncos at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The Giants, led by Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells and Hall of Fame linebackers Harry Carson and Lawrence Taylor, finished with a 14-2 record and then walloped the 49ers, 49-3, in the divisional round before shutting out the Redskins, 17-0, in the NFC Championship Game at a windswept Giants Stadium.
