Grace Smith wins APSE’s feature photo as IndyStar recognized as one of nation’s top sports sections

IndyStar’s Grace Smith won the APSE’s feature photo category in the B classification and finished third in action photo, and Gregg Doyel took home second in columns and sixth in explanatory to lead the sports department’s 13 top 10s, the most in the classification.

Nate Atkins was third in long features for a piece on how former Pacer Jermaine O’Neal‘s lack of a father and role in a brawl has shaped who he is as a dad.

Kyle Neddenriep took fifth in high school beat writing with Zach Osterman (columns), Joel A. Erickson (beat writing) and Dana Hunsinger Benbow (project, “Only woman in the room”) sixth in their categories. Dustin Dopirak was eighth in beat writing for his Pacers coverage.

IndyStar also had Grace Hollars (“Unpinned: The 30-year rise of girls wrestling in Indiana“) and Clark Wade (“Lost gyms: Long a source of pride, the Medaryville gym needs help for a second life“) recognized in video and won a triple crown with top 10s in print portfolio, digital and project.

IndyStar has won 101 APSE awards over the last 10 years, the most by an active sports department in the country.
