Hewitt-Trussville was one out away when the skies absolutely opened up.
On Thursday night, clinging to a 2-1 lead over Thompson in the Alabama 7A state championship, action was called to a halt. The game would be delayed. They couldn’t continue in the conditions.
The field was quickly in terrible shape:

On Friday morning, Hewitt-Trussville took to the field again.
Imagine the overnight nerves, one out and one run separating a state title one way or another.
It took four pitches to finish the job, including a called strike three that was quite a bit off the plate:

It was the fifth state softball title in Class 7A for Hewitt-Trussville.
“It was definitely the craziest,” head coach Taylor Burt told AL.com.
Thompson was the defending state champion, but this time around, it was Hewitt-Trussville celebrating — they just needed to wait a little while to reach that finish line.
