6A Championship storylines

Herriman boys win first 6A title in school history

In the past three years at the 6A state meet, Herriman’s boys track team had had a second-place, third-place and fourth-place finish.

This year it finally got over the hump and claimed its first-ever boys track title.

Led by distance sensation Jackson Spencer — who swept the three distance events — Herriman racked up 107.5 team points to win the 6A title. Lone Peak finished second with 85 points, while last year’s state champs American Fork was third with 62 points.

“Really good kids, and we just felt like we did a lot of traveling. We competed all over the place. We went to Portland, we went to California for Arcadia, went to St. George twice, and we just felt like we’d seen really big competitive fields. And we just felt like we were ready for it,” said Herriman coach Doug Soles.

“We weren’t afraid of anybody out out there that we had to race, and every one of our kids felt like they knew where they could get to and they they were ready to compete for it.”

Distance carried the day for Herriman as expected. It placed two runners in the 800, four in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Of Herriman’s 107.5 points, 80 came in distance events.

Headlining that group is track/cross country super star Jackson Spencer.

“He’s one of those kids that you know he’s going to win. He only thinks about winning. And so that really gives you the ability to kind of build off of of the points you know you’re automatically going to get. And, he’s a team kid,” said Soles.

Sprinter Jett Burbidge picked up some key team points in the 100 and 200 meters as well for the Mustangs.

Corner Canyon girls snap eight-year title drought

For much of Saturday’s state meet, Corner Canyon trailed Lone Peak in the team standings. Coach Alyssa Dalton knew it likely would likely flip if her team executed in the later meets as she expected.

Sure enough, Corner Canyon picked up big points in the discus to close the meet as it pulled away to win its first state championship since 2018.

The Chargers finished 100.5 team points, followed closely by runner-up Lone Peak with 92.5 points.

“It’s amazing. It’s been a long-time coming. I got to Corner Canyon three years ago, the principal looked at me and said, ‘I have big plans for you for Alyssa. I want you to grow our girls’ program.’ And I looked right and said, ‘I wasn’t expecting to be head coach.’ I was head coach previously at Jordan, but here I just planned on being assistant, and she’s like, No, I have big plans for you,’ and here we are three seasons later,” said Dalton.

Corner Canyon’s late push came when sophomore Maryanne Carlson and senior Maile Mataele went 1-2 in the discus to give the Chargers a whopping 18 team points. The lead had suddenly flipped and Corner Canyon made sure it held up by finishing higher than Lone Peak in the finale 4×400 relay.

As a team, Corner Canyon scored points in 14 of 18 events. In addition to Carlson’s win in the discus, junior Willow Stevens also won the 400 meters and then the 4×100 relay team of Lily Winchester, Sayler Grigoratos, Willow Stevens, Layla Valadez finished first in that event as well.

Dalton said that all of the points Corner Canyon racked up throughout the meet in the field events helped offset Lone Peak’s strength in the distance events.

6A Record Breakers

Josh Hamblin, Weber (13.28, 100 hurdles) — broke his own state record of 13.55 that he set a couple weeks ago at the BYU Invitational

“I crossed the line, it didn’t show the time at first. I was just happy I won. Showed the time, I was really emotional. I was like, ‘Wow.’ It hit me. It’s my last high school 110s. So I got really emotional. You just can’t really ask for anything better, honestly.”

Lydia Tarbet, Davis (42.35, 300 hurdles) – broke previous state record of 42.93 by Lone Peak’s Maddy Easton in 2019. Tarbet broke the record in Thursday’s qualifying heat.

“I was actually kind of amazed. I didn’t realize I could run that fast kind of. But I just trusted my running skills and just everything I worked on all year, and then I was able to break it. It was an awesome feeling, I loved it. It was weird to break it in the heat, I wasn’t expecting it, but it was just a great day to run, beautiful weather.”

Lone Peak (9:02.19, 4×800 relay) – broke own record of 9:03.94 from two seasons ago.

Gracie Tait, Lehi (132′11′0, Javelin) – broke state record of 132′03 from Herriman’s Addie Freeland.

6A Multi-Event Winners

Jackson Spencer, Herriman – 800, 1,600, 3,200 meters

“I feel pretty accomplished. I knew I was going to win the 32. I wanted to get a really good time. I think I fell pretty short of what I wanted, um but I was super glad to at least have won it.”

“I’m super happy. I came away with the state record in the 800. I didn’t get that here, but I’ve got that in an earlier race, which I’m super glad about. So at least I got a little bit of legacy that I get to leave here for other people to try and break, I feel pretty accomplished in Utah. Just super happy about it.”
