Ansu Fati’s father has revealed his disappointment at seeing his son miss out on a place in the Spain squad for World Cup 2026.
The forward has spent the season on loan at Monaco and scored 12 goals in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side.
Bori Fati feels Fati did have a chance of being called up and it’s a shame he missed out.
“This season he finished the league well and was in very good shape. He finished the French league with Monaco at a higher level than any other Spanish striker. But if the national team didn’t realize that, then it’s over, there’s nothing that can be done about it,” he told EremNews.
“Ansu finished the season very well. Coach Luis de la Fuente did not call him up, but he trusts other players and that’s it, there is nothing else to do. We had hoped that Ansu would go to the national team, but he didn’t call him up today and that’s where it ends.
“Ansu has not been in the national team for a long time either. If Ansu had played regularly for a long time, he would have been called up to the national team, that’s obvious to him. But he wasn’t playing. And that’s it. It’s a shame, but more opportunities will come.”
Fati’s future is now uncertain. There’s been talk that Monaco will trigger the buy option in his loan contract but also speculation Sevilla are keen and that the player himself is still dreaming of another chance at Barca.
