How Clemson baseball lost to Virginia Tech on one of most unusual walkoff plays

CLEMSON โ€” Clemson baseball lost its eighth ACC series in dramatic and unusual fashion.

Clemsonlost 2-1 to Virginia Tech on May 15 at English Field in Blacksburg, Virginia, giving the Hokies the series.

The Tigers led 1-0 entering the ninth inning, but Virginia Tech scored two runs to win the game, including the walk-off run scored by Nick Locurto.

Virginia Tech tied the game on Locurto’s single, and Pete Daniel followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out.

Locurto advanced to third on a wild pitch by Clemson’s Hayden Simmerson. Clemson catcher Nate Savoie threw to second base trying to get Daniel, who also was attempting to advance. Daniel stopped short of second base and got in a rundown, trying to give Locurto the opportunity to score.

After several throws in the rundown it worked. Clemson got Daniel out near first base as Locurto raced home to end the game.

Savoie threw to shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger, who threw to first baseman Luke Gaffney as the rundown began. Gaffney threw to second baseman Jarren Purify, who threw to Lichtenberger at first base. Daniel was out, but Lichtenberger’s throw home to get Locurto was late.

Clemson baseball has lost eight of 10 ACC series and has lost 20 conference games, tying a program record set in 2021.

The Tigers will miss the NCAA Tournament unless they win the ACC Tournament.

The series finale is May 16 (Noon ET, ACC Network Extra).
