Argentina vs Switzerland: World Cup 2026 Preview
Such was the manner of Argentina’s dramatic win over Egypt that Messi immediately broke down in tears. Whether it was pure joy or a sense of relief, the Inter Miami forward was overcome with emotion.
The 39-year-old has, at times, almost single-handedly kept Argentina’s title defence on track. With eight goals in five games, he tops the goalscoring charts and it would take a brave person to bet against him adding to that tally against Switzerland.
However, he will need some support. Not just in attack from the likes of Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, but also defensively as full-backs Nahuel Molina and Nicolás Tagliafico have consistently been caught out on the counter.
While Argentina have relied on their forwards to advance, Switzerland’s success is built from the back. Manager Murat Yakin prioritises his defence and it is paying off.
The Swiss are yet to trail at any point across the whole World Cup campaign, including qualifiers. It is a remarkable record that comes from an organised backline that is extremely well protected by the excellent Granit Xhaka.
However, there is a concern in attack. Without the injured Johan Manzambi, they struggled to create against Colombia. They’ll hope the talented teenager is fit to play some part in Kansas.
