England vs Ghana: World Cup 2026 Preview

England’s opening game against Croatia was a real test of their potential World Cup-winning credentials. Facing one of Europe’s most consistent teams, they bossed large periods of the game and showed plenty of attacking prowess. The first 15 minutes of the second half were especially impressive.

However, Tomas Tuchel will have been concerned by his side’s fragility at the back, with Croatia scoring two goals that could easily have been avoided. Not afraid of making a big decision, the German coach may well decide to bring Marc Guehi into the fold at the expense of John Stones.

In attack, it was much more positive, with Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford both taking their goals extremely well. The latter will be pushing to start ahead of Anthony Gordon, while Noni Madueke is likely to keep his place as Arsenal team-mate Bukayo Saka is not yet fully match fit.

Scoring more than a solitary goal in a game has been an issue for Ghana for some time, but perhaps what was more concerning for head coach Carlos Queiroz was their inability to even create chances against Panama.

The Black Stars know that they will have to raise their level significantly to upset England, with forward Antoine Semenyo declaring that they “want to prove a point” in Boston.

The Manchester City forward is one player who can cause problems for England’s defensive line, especially as he is likely to come up against club-mates in Nico O’Reilly, Guehi and Stones.
