Japan vs Sweden: World Cup 2026 Preview

Each of Group F’s first two matchdays delivered 10 goals at a not-too-shabby average of five goals per match.

Sweden have seen the very good and very bad, winning 5-1 against Tunisia in their opening fixture before having their goal difference wiped out in a defeat by the same score against the Dutch.

Japan have logged a 2-2 draw (against the Dutch) and a 4-0 win (Tunisia), giving them the slender advantage of being able to benefit from a draw at AT&T Stadium this evening.

Sweden’s progress thus far has been constructed on weak foundations. Graham Potter galvanised them enough to make it through the play-offs after a dismal qualifying campaign under predecessor Jon Dahl Tomasson, and walloping Tunisia proved little.

They were there for the taking against a high-quality team – and that’s what Japan are too. Sweden are susceptible to a well-drilled and effective side, and Japan are both.

Tonight, we’ll find out whether they have a little bit of steel to go with it.
