Germany’s World Cup exit has opened the door to a much-touted move.
Julian Nagelsmann resigned as Germany head coach in the wake of their shock World Cup round-of-32 exit to Ecuador despite his contract running until Euro 2028.
The four-time world champions have now suffered back-to-back tournament exit after also bowing out of Euro 2024 to eventual winners Spain under Nagelsmann.
Jurgen Klopp confirms Germany talks
The German FA (DFB) confirmed the one-time Bayern Munich manager’s departure as well as their preference for him to be succeeded in the role by Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp has been heavily touted with taking charge of Die Mannschaft dating back to his time at Liverpool, where he ushed in an unprecedented new era of success.
He led the Anfield club to glory in the Champions League as well as ending a 30-year wait to be win the Premier League title before stepping away in May 2024.
Since leaving the Reds, the 59-year-old has been out of club management but remains actively involved in the game as Red Bull’s head of global soccer.
Away from his current role, Klopp has been a pundit for German television at the World Cup and confirmed that talks are taking place over his potential coronation.
“Yes, I can confirm the talks. Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB are looking for a successor and they’re talking to me,” he told Magenta TV.
He added: “I’m [still] under contract with Red Bull. I’ve said I’m interested in the talks. They will be intensive because this isn’t only about Julian Nagelsmann.”
If appointed, Klopp’s first game in charge of his homeland would be a trip to the Netherlands in September at the start of the Nations League group stage.
Should Germany qualify for Euro 2028, the former Borussia Dortmund boss could be set for a return to Liverpool if his side are drawn in one of four potential groups.
Everton‘s Hill Dickinson Stadium will host four matches involving Groups A, C, D and E as well as a last-16 tie between the runners up from Group A and B.
