The Boston Red Sox have made some roster changes today, with the most interesting being calling up their No. 26 prospect, lefty starting pitcher Eduardo Valera, who will most likely take the bump in the final game of the series against the New York Yankees tomorrow.
However, another interesting part of the roster chance wasn’t necessarily a good one. The Sox once again have put their young slugger first baseman Triston Casas on the 60-day IL.

Casas has been in the league for five seasons now. Out of a possible 671 games, Casas has only appeared in 251. In 2022, he was called up late, and only played in 27 games. 2023 was his only full season, where he played 132 games, and was third place for Rookie of the Year.
Since then, he’s been the epitome of fragility. In 2024, he missed over half the season with torn cartilage in his ribcage. When he came back in 2025, he played in 29 games before he ruptured his patellar tendon running over first base. Now, he’s been put on the 60-day IL due to an abdominal strain.

On top of the fragility, Casas has been a mess at the plate since the injuries started to pile up. In his ROTY-candidate year in 2023, he slashed .263/.367/.490/.856 with 21 doubles, 24 home runs, and 65 RBI.
Since then, in 2024 he batted a decent .241/.337/.462/.800 with eight doubles, 13 home runs, and 30 RBI before his rib injury. Finally, in 2025, he hit a pitiful .182/.277/.303/.580 with three doubles and home runs, and 11 RBI.
Every year since 2023, the injuries have increased, and his stats have decreased. If this continues, there might not be room for Casas on the Major League roster.
The decision to be made

The decision is clear. The Sox either need to trade Casas or designate him for assignment. While it pains to say it, he’s been a load they’ve been carrying for too long now. Especially now that the Sox have an everyday first baseman in Willson Contreras.
There might be some team out there that thinks they can reclaim him, and if the Sox can get anything for him, that would be a win. Otherwise, Boston’s last option is to send him to the glass box known as AAA , and be a “break in case of emergency” first baseman.
