Jakub Mensik reached the first Grand Slam semi-final of his career after beating Joao Fonseca at Roland Garros.

The 20-year-old also passed Ivan Lendl as the youngest Czech man in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final. Mensik beat Fonseca 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3) on Court Philippe Chatrier to continue his breakthrough run in Paris.

The Czech player had to hold off a late push from Fonseca, who saved match points in the third set before Mensik closed out the tie break.

It secured Mensik’s place in the last four of a major for the first time and added another major milestone to what has become the biggest tournament of his young career.

Mensik’s reaction after match point reflected the scale of the occasion. After sealing victory, he pointed towards himself in celebration as he took in the moment on one of the biggest courts in tennis.

Fonseca had been one of the stories of the tournament, but Mensik handled the occasion impressively and produced one of the most controlled performances of his career.

Speaking after the match, Mensik described Fonseca as a strong competitor and said the win was one of his best performances so far.

His emotions were still clear away from the court. Mensik later suffered cramp during his press conference, briefly stopping mid-answer before laughing off the incident and continuing.

It was another sign of how physically demanding his run in Paris has been. Earlier in the tournament, he had also suffered badly with cramp after a five-set win over Mariano Navone.

This time, though, the discomfort came after a very different kind of moment. Mensik was not simply surviving. He was celebrating the biggest win of his career.

The victory also gave Mensik a significant place in Czech tennis history. At 20, he passed Ivan Lendl as the youngest Czech man in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final.

The comparison is not about matching Lendl’s career achievements. Lendl remains one of the greatest players Czech tennis has produced.

But it underlines the size of Mensik’s achievement at Roland Garros. He has gone beyond a promising run and reached the stage of the tournament where only serious contenders remain.

Mensik will now face Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, where he will attempt to reach a first Grand Slam final. Whatever happens next, his win over Fonseca has already become a landmark result.

It gave Mensik his first major semi-final, a historic Czech record and a reaction that showed exactly how much the moment meant.
