Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Jose Soriano had yet another scoreless outing Wednesday, and set an MLB record in the process.
His five-inning shutout performance made him the first non-opening MLB pitcher since 1900 to allow one-or-fewer runs through his first six starts of the season.
José Soriano is the first MLB starting pitcher since 1900 to allow one-or-fewer total runs through his first six starts of a season (excluding Openers).
Soriano now has a 0.24 ERA (37.2 IP – 1 ER) on the year.

During those six starts, Soriano has 37.2 innings pitched and has allowed just one run for a 0.24 ERA—more than enough for the MLB lead among starters. He has a total of 42 strikeouts this season, and is a clear frontrunner for the AL Cy Young award in the young season.
Wednesday marked Soriano’s shortest start of the season so far, lasting just five innings. In his other five outings this season, the right-hander threw 5.2 innings once, six innings twice and has one outing each reaching seven and eight innings.
Soriano established himself in the Halos’ rotation last season, where he made 31 starts in his first fully healthy year in the rotation. He had a 4.26 ERA last year, but also showed flashes of the talent he’s put on display this season.
He had nine scoreless outings last year, and each of them lasted longer than 5.2 innings.
The Angels will hope the right-hander can maintain this form for the remainder of the year as they look to crack the postseason for the first time in more than a decade.
