The Indiana Fever have enjoyed the return of Caitlin Clark this season after she missed all but 13 games last season with various lower-body injuries. Clark had to shake off some rust in her first few games of the season, especially from the three-point line, but has looked more like the player who won Rookie of the Year and was named to first-team All-WNBA.
Unfortunately for Clark and the Fever, she really struggled both on offense and defense against the Golden State Valkyries. Those struggles stretched into her next game against the Portland Fire on Thursday night.
Clark turned in her worst performance of the season, going 1-7 from the field for only six points. After committing her fourth foul in the third quarter, head coach Stephanie White made the decision to sit Clark and didn’t reinsert her until there were six minutes left in the fourth. In total, Clark only played 22 minutes of the game, just over half of the total action.

Clark’s struggles on the defensive end were pronounced once again, with Portland’s game plan clearly to attack her there. Fans on social media weren’t quiet about the performance Clark turned in.
“But she the face of the league? Over an actual point guard with finesse ? And an actual dribble drive game ? Man stop it,” one fan wrote on X.
“What a fall from grace,” someone else added.
“Caitlin defense is just terrible at times. teams now have just said we are gonna hunt and attack her over and over,” one person added.
“It appears CaitlinClark time in Indiana is coming to an end. I think it’s best the Fever let Caitlin go to the Cleveland expansion team. Because I don’t see her fitting with any other team right now,” one fan added.
There’s still a lot of the season left for Clark and the Fever to get things figured out, but they’ll need her to be better. If not, one of the sport’s brightest stars could flame out far too soon.
