Justin Gaethje is widely viewed as the underdog heading into his lightweight title unification bout against Ilia Topuria next month at UFC Freedom 250.

The majority opinion is that the stylistic matchup favours Topuria, whose precision, composure and finishing threat have made him a difficult puzzle for opponents. That makes every possible edge important for Gaethje.

And during the UFC Freedom 250 press conference, he believes he spotted something useful in Topuria’s reaction to Josh Hokit.

Topuria became involved in an altercation with Hokit while defending Alex Pereira, after the heavyweight’s comments appeared to cross a line.

Gaethje noticed the reaction and later suggested it revealed something about the Spaniard’s temperament, even if he understood the instinct behind defending a friend.

“It’s funny because he’s very emotional. That was good to see,” the 37-year-old American said on his own YouTube channel.

“Although I do get emotional defending my friends as well, you can’t let another man control you like that. Never.”

Gaethje and Topuria have largely kept things respectful during the build-up. There has not been the same level of personal hostility that often surrounds major UFC title fights.

Still, that moment could change how the interim champion approaches the mental battle. If he believes Topuria can be pulled into emotion, ‘The Highlight’ may test that before fight night.

Ilia Topuria’s camp has already identified Justin Gaethje flaw

Topuria’s side has also studied a weakness. Training footage previously showed his brother Aleksandre Topuria pointing to Gaethje’s vulnerability when he attacks.

The concern is that Gaethje commits heavily when throwing. That aggression makes him dangerous, but it also leaves openings for sharp counters.

In that context, Aleksandre’s message to Ilia was about being selective rather than reckless.

That leaves both fighters with something to target. Gaethje sees emotion in Topuria, while Topuria’s camp sees openings in Gaethje’s offence.
