Kon Knueppel was a major revelation in his one season at Duke. We started to realize that he was unusual when Brotherhood Podcast host Caleb Foster was asking his teammates who had surprised them the most, and, almost to a man, they said Knueppel.

Then during his rookie season, we noticed that not only was he playing well, but the Charlotte culture had gotten much more joyous, and we thought that much of that change was probably because of Knueppel’s influence.

But we’ve never really seen him address his influence on his teams in any way, and even here, he does it indirectly.

Nonetheless, it’s important.

On his Old Man and The Three podcast appearance, Knueppel discusses how he made a conscious decision when he got to Duke to focus on relationships.

This is interesting, because from a distance anyway, Knueppel seems to be reserved, if not introverted. He shut out the hype and realized he needed to focus more on the group to succeed, both personally and collectively.

It also brings back something Boston Celtics GM Brad Stevens once said. He told an interviewer that he wanted everyone with the organization, even the janitors, to think about being champions. He wanted the whole organization to think like that.

But Knueppel got there at 19, and that’s just so impressive. His emotional intelligence must be quite high.
