Many NBA fans got to know the San Antonio Spurs through their hard-nosed style of basketball under coach Gregg Popovich in the mid-2000s and 2010s. Even before that, the team was led by David “The Admiral” Robinson to their first championship in 1999.

In 2026, the Spurs returned to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017 and are equipped with 22-year-old star Victor Wembanyama for the foreseeable future. The Frenchman has already established himself as one of the league’s best defensive players and is nearly impossible to stop once he puts the ball in the hoop a few times in a row.

With Gregg Popovich back in his former position as president of basketball operations, head coach Mitch Johnson has been tasked with leading his team back into a new wave of glory days. With Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, and Dylan Harper on his young squad, the sky is the limit for these Spurs.

Here’s a look at the Spurs’ playoff history, including their five NBA championship wins.

Have the Spurs won an NBA championship?

Throughout their franchise history, the Spurs have won five championships, all under coach Gregg Popovich. The team was victorious in 1999 (4-1 over New York Knicks), 2003 (4-2 over New Jersey Nets), 2005 (4-3 over Detroit Pistons), 2007 (4-0 over Cleveland Cavaliers), and 2014 (4-1 over Miami Heat).

San Antonio has six appearances in the NBA Finals since the franchise’s inception in 1967, dropping only one of those championship series (2013, lost in seven games to the Heat). Their record in the Western Conference Finals before their 2026 series against the Oklahoma City Thunder is 31-34, according to StatMuse.

When was the last time the Spurs made the NBA Finals?

San Antonio’s last appearance in the NBA Finals came in 2014, when they were victorious against the Miami Heat in five games. This was also the final time their aging core of Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Tim Duncan made it past the Western Conference Semifinals.

Since that championship-winning season, the Spurs have not gotten past the Western Conference Finals (2017). That year, they were promptly swept by the Golden State Warriors, who were in the midst of their own dynasty run.

Spurs NBA playoff history

Across San Antonio’s surplus of seasons of NBA basketball, they have made the playoffs 40 times. During their playoff games played, a number that tallies over 400, the team is fourth all-time in playoff wins as of May 2026, according to StatMuse.

The Spurs had not won an NBA Championship until Popovich left his post as the team’s president of basketball operations and general manager in 1996. Three years later, the team was lifting its first-ever Larry O’Brien Trophy after a win over New York. All five of the team’s championships have come with Popovich at the helm.
