Liverpool are ready to sell a Richard Hughes signing ahead of schedule. It’s time to call it a day.
Richard Hughes is entering his third summer transfer window with Liverpool since taking over as sporting director. He’s made some massive signings for the club – though, virtually all in his second summer.
That first summer saw just two signings, of which only one actually arrived. Giorgi Mamardashvili signed for Liverpool but remained on loan with Valencia for a year.
The other was Federico Chiesa, who went straight into the first-team squad. But what a difficult time it’s been ever since. The Italian has struggled badly for minutes under Arne Slot.
Chiesa has just two Premier League starts since joining Liverpool. In fact, if you tally up all his minutes over two full seasons, you get the equivalent of around five matches.
The winger was supposed to be a bargain signing who added something different to the squad over a four-year contract. Instead, Liverpool are ready to call it early and sell Chiesa this summer.
That’s according to the Athletic, where it’s reported that the Reds outright expect to sell him. Exactly where Chiesa is heading isn’t entirely clear, though we can assume it’ll be back to Italy.
The end of an incredibly frustrating spell for everyone involved.
Federico Chiesa: Situation Summary
Liverpool Campaign and Stats
As of 31 May 2026, Federico Chiesa has concluded a frustrating domestic campaign with Liverpool. The 28-year-old Italian winger found regular starting opportunities hard to come by under Arne Slot, predominantly acting as a late impact substitute. Throughout a turbulent season that culminated in a 1–1 draw against Brentford on 24 May, Chiesa made 30 appearances across all competitions, but registered just five starts. Despite his heavily restricted playing time on the pitch, he chipped in with three goals and provided three assists for the Reds.
Serie A Links and Anfield Future
Having struggled to anchor down a regular role on Merseyside, speculation is mounting over a return to his homeland. Newly promoted Serie A outfit Como have emerged as surprise suitors, establishing concrete contact regarding a summer move to hand the former Juventus forward a fresh start. However, despite intense external rumours, Chiesa remains hesitant to cut his Premier League journey short, retaining hope of proving his worth to Liverpool’s incoming management.
