Liverpool should ‘do anything’ to bring in Luis Enrique as their next manager if Arne Slot eventually gets sacked.
That’s according to former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy, who can’t see under-pressure Slot surviving far into next season.
The Dutch boss has been on the receiving end of huge criticism from fans and even his own players amid the Reds’ disappointing campaign.
Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League and limped into the Champions League spots, but their title defence was underwhelming and that has led to the manager facing calls to be sacked.
There has been no indication from the club that they are planning to let Slot go this summer, while he has spoken of his plans for the new season when speaking to the media.
So, as things stand, he will be staying – but if he does, Murphy doesn’t think he’ll last long if his side doesn’t pick up some early wins.
The ex-midfielder predicted on talkSPORT’s Kick Off: “If Slot doesn’t start well, it’s [pressure] going to start again.
“I don’t think he’s got a big say in the players [recruitment], by the way. But I think he’s going to have some sort of say in the players that come in.
“But if he starts badly and they’re sitting in fifth, sixth after eight games, it’s done.”
When asked if he would’ve tried to get Xabi Alonso, who was linked to Liverpool before joining Chelsea, to replace Slot, he added: “I would try and break the bank and do anything I can to get Luis Enrique.”
Murphy then continued: “Well, if Enrique wins the Champions League again, what more can he do?
“He must be bored there, playing in a Mickey Mouse league where he wins every week. All he’s looking forward to is the Champions League.
“He must want more challenge, surely?
“If you watch PSG as a Liverpool fan, you’re thinking, that’s how I want us to play. A bit like Jurgen Klopp‘s team, aren’t they, PSG?
“And if you’re one of the biggest clubs in the world, go and get the best.”
Enrique has been Paris Saint-Germain manager for three years, winning 121 of his 173 games in charge to date.
He has won the Champions League, three Ligue 1 titles, two French Cups, three French Super Cups, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup whilst at the club.
And he still has another Champions League final to play, with PSG meeting Arsenal in the showpiece on Saturday, live on talkSPORT.
Too far gone?
Murphy believes that Liverpool should make the bold move for Enrique as Slot’s time is running out very quickly.
As the criticism continues to grow, he is struggling to see a path back to success for the Reds boss…
On the growing number of fans who appear to dislike Slot, Murphy said: “I think the noise has just grown.
“I mean, if it dissipated because they started winning some games and playing well at the end of the season, that’s fair enough.
“But it hasn’t, it’s gone the other way.”
Slot has been in the Liverpool dugout since Klopp’s departure in 2024, winning the Premier League in his first season.
However, the Reds transitioned away from their iconic boss’s old tactics and went from four losses in their title-winning campaign to 12 defeats this term, seeing fans turn on the head coach.
