Following the trade of nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, the New York Giants addressed a significant gap in their defensive front by signing veteran D.J. Reader.
The 6-foot-3, 330-pound lineman, who spent time with the Houston Texans, Cincinnati Bengals, and most recently the Detroit Lions, brings proven experience as a run-stopper and interior anchor.
Lions radio analyst and former Giants offensive tackle Lomas Brown, a seven-time Pro Bowler, praised Reader’s fit in New York’s scheme.
In Detroit, Reader excelled as a two-gap player, occupying blockers to free up teammates like Alim McNeill for penetration. This approach contributed to a top-14 run defense for the Lions.
Brown envisions Reader performing a similar stabilizing role alongside the Giants’ talented edge rushers, including Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux.
“You’ve got talent all along that defensive line. Now, plug in D.J. Reader—just think about what you guys could do off the edges with that defensive line, what guys could do stunt-wise. So yeah, I think he’ll be an invaluable piece to add to that,” Brown told Big Blue Breakdown Live!.
Brown highlighted Reader’s low pad level, strength, and quickness as assets that will make him difficult to move and enable effective stunts.
“I think the one thing is his quickness getting off the ball, but [it’s] his pad levels,” Brown said. “He plays with a low pad level, and any time a guy plays with a low pad level, it’s hard to dig them out of there. That’s why he’s such a stalwart in the middle of that defensive line.
“He’s strong, but, as I say, he’s quick enough that if you needed him to play the 1-technique and just penetrate to get upfield, I believe he can do that. … You could see the quickness, you could see the strength, you know, you could see all the things that you need.”
At 32, Reader remains durable and physically capable, positioning him as a key addition to elevate the Giants’ overall defensive performance.
