Man United star forced to undergo surgery and confirms he’s OUT of World Cup

Manchester United have confirmed that centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to rectify a back problem.

The Dutchman hasn’t featured for United since playing the full 90 in a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace back in November.

As such, the 26-year-old has been restricted to just 13 league starts for United this season.

Manchester United issue statement on De Ligt

“Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury,” a statement read on United’s official website.

“Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action.

“Everyone at Manchester United wishes Matthijs well for his recovery and will continue supporting him every step of the way.”

De Ligt: I’m ‘determined as ever’ to return

De Ligt, meanwhile, added: “Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football.

“I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”

And shortly after United’s statement, De Ligt posted an update on his official Instagram page in a hospital bed giving a thumbs up.

“After 6 months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left,” the caption read.

“I’m disappointed I couldn’t help the team the last 6 months and obviously missing out on the World Cup, but I am looking forward to doing everything to get back in front of the fans and feeling better again.”

De Ligt hasn’t played since Michael Carrick succeeded Ruben Amorim at the Old Trafford helm.

Since taking charge, Carrick has moved away from the three-man backline the Portuguese boss favoured and back to a 4-2-3-1 setup.

And Carrick’s appointment had the desired effect as United recovered from an indifferent first half to the season to secure a Champions League finish.

talkSPORT understands that United are now set to offer the 44-year-old a two-year contract, with the option for a further year, as reward for the club’s flying form since taking over.

United will play their last home game of the season on Sunday when they welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford before a trip to Brighton on the final day of the campaign.
