Matta, Falmouth baseball blank Vineyard in nine inning walk-off win

It was dramatic to say the least as No. 4 Falmouth outlasted No. 29 Martha’s Vineyard 1-0 at Guv Fuller Field on Monday.

Connor Oliver hit a walk-off single to left field in a nine-inning MIAA Division 3 baseball state tournament Round of 32 thriller.

Josh Matta was electric on the mound for Falmouth (15-4) as he held Martha’s Vineyard (11-11) scoreless through nine innings of work with 10 strikeouts, two walks and two pick-offs.

Eathen Vecchione made a saving play early in the game on a passed ball, and with Matta covering home, they were able to get the out on the runner trying to score from third.

Falmouth will host No. 13 Dracut in the Round of 16 on June 3.

In other high school sports action:

Softball 

Div. 4, Round of 32 –No. 16 Monomoy 6, No. 17 Clinton 3: Kinsey Lister recorded 13 strikeouts, allowed just five hits and three runs (one earned run) in seven innings on the mound for Monomoy (16-5). She went 2-for-3 at the plate with a two RBI double to open the scoring in the first inning. Willa Leighton added a two RBI double of her own as Monomoy led from start to finish. Kate Huse (2-for-2) and Kiley Mawn (0-for-1, two walks, one RBI) scored twice. Lexi Totten (1-for-3) and Sabrina Bassett each scored once.

Monomoy will travel to top-ranked Advanced Math and Science Academy on June 3.

Div. 4, Round of 32 – No. 15 Sandwich 3, No. 18 Abington 2: Sandwich (18-3) rallied to advanced in the state tournament behind a Victoria Lott walk-off RBI. Arabella Finton singled to drive in Mia Consalvi.

Sandwich will face No. 2 Hampshire Regional at a date and time to be determined.

Girls Lacrosse 

Div. 4, Round of 16 – No. 8 Nantucket 11, No. 9 Bromfield 9: Nantucket (18-2) overturned a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit with less than five minutes to play to reach the quarterfinals.

It sets up an all-Cape and Islands matchup with top-ranked Sandwich at a date and time to be determined.

Boys Lacrosse 

Div. 3, Round of 32 – No. 2 Norwell 22, No. 31 St. John Paul II 2: St. John Paul II (15-4) fell to state championship contender Norwell to end the season. It beat Saint Bernard’s in a preliminary round game.

Div. 4, Round of 32 – No. 2 Nantucket 15, No. 31 Monomoy 0: Nantucket (16-3) won its third straight game to advance to a home matchup with No. 15 Rockland on June 3. It was the team’s third shutout win over Monomoy (6-14) this season.

Harry Beaumont made 13 saves in a losing effort. Quinn Morris, Carter Massey, Nick Hadden and Jack Ford played well defensively. Monomoy defeated Monson in an overtime thriller in a preliminary round matchup.

Girls Tennis

Div. 3, Round of 16 – No. 1 Martha’s Vineyard 4, No. 16 North Reading 1: Undefeated Martha’s Vineyard (18-0) eased into the quarterfinals with its 18th straight win. A matchup with either No. 8 Wilmington or No. 9 Falmouth awaits Martha’s Vineyard at a date and time to be determined.

Boys Tennis 

Div. 3, Round of 32 – No. 3 Newburyport 5,  No. 30 Nantucket 0: Nantucket (9-9) saw its season come to an end in only its second defeat via sweep of the season. It beat Case in the preliminary round.
