Pep Guardiola has just announced his departure from Manchester City. Vincent Kompany was their preferred successor, but Bayern Munich had already tied him down to a longer contract. This was down to the efforts of Max Eberl:

Max Eberl anticipated Pep Guardiola’s departure and Manchester City’s interest in Vincent Kompany, and was the one who pushed hard internally to extend the Belgian coach’s contract until 2029 in the first half of the season. Kompany has long been considered by City as Guardiola’s successor.

Former Chelsea manager and Pep student Enzo Maresca is widely tipped to succeed the Spaniard, with an announcement of his appointment imminent. Eberl foresaw this event and moved to secure the source of Bayern’s recent success.

But hey let’s sack him because according to Uli Hoeneß, Eberl wanted to keep Thomas Tuchel before hiring Kompany. Sounds about right.
