Two of the biggest teams in Major League Baseball made two somewhat shocking moves over the past few days, as the Boston Red Sox moved on from Alex Cora, and Rob Thomson was let go by the Philadelphia Phillies.
During the offseason, it seemed like both skippers had a chance to not only win a World Series, but also definitely not lose their jobs.
Things change quickly in this game, and for the New York Mets and skipper Carlos Mendoza, that’s something he’s unfortunately going to have to deal with.
Some believe that Mendoza will be fired in the next few days, though it’s being viewed as the most drastic change the Mets could make, not one that’s necessarily going to happen in the immediate future.
“The most drastic change the Mets could reasonably make is firing Mendoza. The Boston Red Sox showed on Saturday that an underachieving team can make such a decision in April when they parted with Alex Cora, a World Series winner. Mendoza said he considered Cora one of the game’s best managers,” Will Sammon of The Athletic wrote.
For Mets fans who wanted to hire Cora if they decided to move on from Mendoza, that doesn’t seem all too likely. Cora turned down the Phillies job over the weekend, with the veteran manager suggesting that he wants to stay with his family for the time being.
