Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar remains in the national team’s plans but must be fully fit to secure a recall ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The 33-year-old forward has not featured for Brazil in two years due to injuries, most recently suffering serious knee ligament damage in October 2023.
Speaking ahead of Brazil’s friendly against Japan in Tokyo, Ancelotti praised Neymar’s talent, saying:
“Neymar can play at his highest level in this team without any problems. When he is in good physical condition, he has the quality to play not only in Brazil but in any team in the world because of his talent.”
Ancelotti emphasized that while individual quality is vital, balance, commitment, and teamwork remain essential for Brazil’s style of “beautiful football.” Since taking over in May, the Italian coach has guided Brazil to three wins, one draw, and one defeat, improving defensive solidity while scoring nine goals.
In Brazil’s last outing, they thrashed South Korea 5-0, showcasing attacking prowess with forwards Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Matheus Cunha, and teenager Estevao leading the charge. Tuesday’s match against Japan will allow Ancelotti to further refine tactics and assess the squad ahead of next year’s World Cup in North America.
“Commitment and teamwork are essential. Playing beautifully is important, but the most important thing is to win,” Ancelotti added.
Neymar’s potential return hinges on regaining full match fitness, with the coach keeping the door open for the star to reignite his international career.
