The New England Patriots cut ties with Stefon Diggs this offseason, but he could still re-sign with the team as a free agent.
Earlier this offseason, Eliot Wolf said he is not closing the door on Diggs, and after he was found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery, he could make sense as a signing for the Patriots. The team would seemingly only be interested in a cheaper, short-term deal. They have already signed Romeo Doubs and are expected to acquire A.J. Brown after June 1.
Assuming the Patriots land Brown as many insiders expect, he, Doubs and Diggs would be in contention to be the best trio in football with Drake Maye as the trigger man. However, NFL insider Albert Breer thinks it’s more likely that Diggs signs elsewhere if the Patriots trade for Brown.
“Now, I believe the Patriots love Diggs, and Diggs would love to return,” wrote Breer on Tuesday. “But any realistic talk about his return, to me, hinges on whether the Brown trade happens. Assuming Brown does become a Patriot, I think Diggs will probably be somewhere in that one-year, $10 million range. The Chiefs could make sense. The Commanders might, too, since Diggs is from D.C. The Falcons and Rams would also be interesting landing spots.”
When Wolf said earlier this offseason that he would not close the door on signing Diggs, he mentioned that the team could revisit signing him in the case of an injury. It did not seem like the Patriots had him as a priority, and the charges against him were not the key factor in his release. The Patriots likely felt they could upgrade, and they are set to if they land Brown.
As much as fans and players would like Diggs back in New England, the odds seem low if the Patriots complete a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Brown.
