No. 9 Florida State softball season ends in decisive game against UCF Knights

After taking game one from the Knights, Florida State couldn’t hang on to win a Super Regional deciding game.

Recap, FSU 2-1, UCF

3rd Inning

Both pitchers, Jazzy Francik and UCF’s Isabella Vega had perfect games going into the third inning. As the away team, the Knights led off the inning. Francik got the first two outs before a bloop single put a runner on. Now pitching for the first time on the day with pressure, a double into the gap scored the run from first base. Francik easily got out of the inning, but UCF struck first.

Looking for the equalizer, Hayley Griggs led off the bottom of the inning. Fouling off multiple pitches, Griggs got the one she liked, and the solo shot tied the game 1-1.

4th Inning

UCF continued to put runners on with a walk and a fielder’s choice. Francik got a strike out, and a soft ground ball to third ended the threat from the Knights.

Anna Hinde led off the bottom of the inning, and in a hitters count, she sent the ball out. The solo shot gave FSU their first lead of the day, now a 2-1 ballgame.

Following up the homerun, Vega walked Kennedy Harp. However, the defense got three straight outs to limit the runs to just one.

7th Inning

Still leading 2-1, Francik came back out for her seventh inning of work. After a lead off strikeout, she was lifted for Ashtyn Danley. A infield hit had the Knights on first base, and a fielder’s choice put the second out on the board. A ball back to the circle secured game seven for the ‘Noles.

Recap FSU 2-4 UCF

1st Inning

Now as the designated away team, the Seminoles faced Tori Payne in the circle. Jaysoni Beachum knocked a one out double off of Payne, having Danley join her after a walk. A double play from the UCF defense stranded both runners.

Danley got the start, after getting the final two outs of the first game, she gave up a one out single. With one runner on, a two run shot put the Knights up 2-0. The inning continued with a walk, but a double play cleaned up the inning.

3rd Inning

FSU had Beachum and Danley on after Vega gave up a single and walk to the pair. With two outs, Hinde cut the deficit in half with an RBI single. After the hit, UCF switched to Lena Elkins out of the bullpen.

A five pitch walk to Griggs put ducks on the pond for the ‘Noles. A single up the middle from Shelby McKenzie scored two, and Griggs snuck in on the throw. However, a runner leaving early review changed the play, leaving FSU with only one run out of the inning, 2-1.

4th Inning

A one out single by Harp, and a bunt from Makenna Sturgis turned the lineup over. Now two outs, UCF switched in the circle again, this time for Regan Vokoun. A hard hit from Isa Torres tied the game, with herself and Sturgis in scoring position.

Chaos on the bases brought Payne back into the circle. A walk to Beachum loaded the bases with two outs. However, a pop up kept the game tied at 2-2 between FSU and UCF.

In the bottom of the inning, Bella Dimitrijevic took over for Danley in the circle. A lead off baserunner had runners on for the Knights, who came up with a 2 run homerun to retake the lead. Dimitrijevic’s second hit of the day brought Danley back in, with one out. The junior handled her two batters, sending her team back on offense.

5th Inning

For UCF offensively, a walk and single had a pair on with only one out. Francik relieved Danley in the jam, out of the bullpen. A couple of fly outs put the ‘Noles back on offense, with the game dwindling away.

7th Inning

Now FSU only had three outs to work with, and down two runs. With the top of the lineup batting against Payne, a one out walk was issued to Beachum. A line drive gave UCF an out and an single had two on base for the ‘Noles. A fly out stranded the two runners, and ended the Seminoles season, sending UCF to Super Regionals.
