Real Madrid have issued an official statement confirming that Ferland Mendy has suffered a fresh injury to the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Ferland Mendy by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rectus femoris tendon injury in his right leg. His recovery will be monitored,” the statement read.
Mendy suffered the injury during Sunday night’s La Liga clash against RCD Espanyol. Just around ten minutes into the game, the veteran full-back went down with the problem and had to be withdrawn by manager Alvaro Arbeloa.
After tests conducted today, it has been confirmed that he has an injury in the rectus femoris tendon.
Season over
While the official statement from the club does not mention a recovery period, a report from COPE claims that Mendy’s season is now over.
Indeed, the left-back, who has now suffered his fifth injury of the season, will not play any part in the remaining four fixtures of the season.
In fact, if he opts to undergo surgery to address the issue, the Frenchman could be out for as long as five minutes, meaning he would even miss the start of the next campaign.
It is believed that the left-back has suffered the injury in the same area that required him to undergo surgery back in April last year, which kept him out for six months.
So, it remains to be seen if he has to undergo surgery once again or whether he can recover through conservative treatment.
Irrespective of that, this comes as another bitter blow for Real Madrid, who have already lost the likes of Eder Militao and Rodrygo Goes to long-term injuries this season.
