The Green Bay Packers are choosing to move forward with Kyle McCord over Desmond Ridder, as far as their reserve-futures quarterbacks go. According to Tom Pelissero, Ridder has been released by the Packers, who just signed Tyrod Taylor on Monday.

With the addition of Taylor, the Packers were up to five quarterbacks, a huge number. Generally, they like to be down to about three for camp. Moving forward, the team has starter Jordan Love, Taylor, McCord and undrafted rookie Kyron Drones.

With the lanes cleared, all eyes will be on McCord this offseason, who can compete for QB2 on the 53-man roster or a spot on the practice squad. The Packers got their first glimpse of McCord throwing live at their rookie minicamp, as McCord signed with the team after the 2025 season concluded. Ridder was signed by Green Bay on New Year’s Eve in 2025, so they’ve been able to have him around in practice for a while.

A couple of hours ago, I would have guessed Ridder had the best chance to be Love’s backup this year. With Taylor now on the roster, though, things have clearly changed quickly.
