May 6 (UPI) — Joel Embiid will not play against the New York Knicks in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Philadelphia 76ers announced Wednesday.
The 76ers said the All-NBA center is dealing with a right ankle sprain and right hip soreness. The 76ers will play the Knicks at 7 p.m. EDT Wednesday in New York.
Embiid made just 3 of 11 shots for 14 points and four rebounds in the 76ers’ loss to the Knicks in the series opener Monday in New York. He averaged a team-high 25.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this postseason.
Embiid was initially listed as probable for Game 2. He did not participate in a Wednesday morning shoot around and was ruled out in the NBA’s official 1 p.m. injury report.
Andre Drummond and Adem Bona are among the players who could fill in for Embiid. The Knicks are 10.5-point favorites to beat the 76ers in Game 2.
Game 3 of the best-of-seven game series will be held Friday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. The 76ers will host Game 4 on Sunday.
