The Philadelphia Phillies are struggling to find wins early in the season, while division rival Atlanta Braves continues to build momentum. Several players have underperformed, but no one has struggled quite like third baseman Alec Bohm. Despite that, manager Rob Thomson is standing by his player.

“I thought about it,” Thomson said. “But you know what, he’s going to play the next two days (against a pair of left-handed Cubs’ pitchers) so let’s run him through and see if we can get him going a little bit.”

It’s clear Bohm still has the support of his manager, who hopes this is just a rough patch. However, his production has not matched previous seasons, and if nothing changes, the Phillies may have to consider other options at third base.

“Bohm seems to always fall into a historic slump, but his current slide has fans turning against him quicker than usual. Entering Friday, he is 0-for-his-last-23 with seven strikeouts. Six of his 10 RBI were recorded in two games. This streakiness is pitting him in an even deeper hole than when he said on the field that he hates Philadelphia. Is it time to really move on from Bohm? The team’s top prospect, Aidan Miller, getting hurt ahead of the season bought Bohm some time, for now,” TBOH’s PJ Potter wrote.

Top prospect Aidan Miller is primarily a shortstop but has the versatility to play multiple positions. Bohm still has time to turn things around, especially since Miller has yet to return to full action.

“Miller has been “doing everything except for swinging,” according to Philliesmanager Rob Thomson, including fielding ground balls. The team is hoping to get the 21-year-old back swinging a bat this week as he continues to work his way back from lower-back soreness, which has plagued him since February,” CBS Sports wrote.

The Phillies once leaned heavily on Bohm during his All-Star campaign in 2024, but his production has declined since then. Had Miller been healthy to start the season, he likely would have already had an opportunity to challenge for the third base job.

Bohm is in the final stretch of his current deal, valued at $10.2 million. He still has time to regain his form, but if the struggles continue, he could find himself losing playing time once Miller returns.
