Pirates Rattled by Rodríguez, Fall to Diamondbacks in Desert

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ bats fell silent against Eduardo Rodríguez and the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 9-0 loss at Chase Field on Tuesday night. 

Scoring Plays

Bottom 1st, 2-0 ARZ: Ketel Marte tripled off Bubba Chandler (1-4) and scored on an Adrian Del Castillo sac fly to center. Later in the inning, another miscommunication between Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz in center resulted in an RBI double of Ildemaro Vargas.

Bottom 6th, 7-0 ARZ: The Diamondbacks (17-17) struck for five runs against Pirates reliever Yohan Ramírez. Gabriel Moreno doubled home a run and later scored on a two-run double from Nolan Arenado. Alek Thomas beat a throw home on a Marte chopper to short and Corbin Carroll capped off the big inning with a sac fly to center.

Bottom 8th, 9-0 ARZ: Arizona tacked on two more off Dennis Santana in the ninth. Marte ripped an RBI single to right and Del Castillo did the same two batters later.

Key Moments

The Pirates (19-17) had a chance to at least draw even in the second inning with two on and one out but came up empty.

Arizona blew the game open against Ramírez, who allowed as many earned runs in this game as he had all season entering play.

Player of the Game

Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodríguez (3-0) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and held the Pirates scoreless across seven innings. He allowed two hits, walked three and struck out a season-high seven batters.

Stat to Know

Konnor Griffin extended his career-high hit streak to seven games with a double in the seventh. He’s hitting .435 (10-for-23) with two doubles, a triple, a home run, four RBI and three walks during the streak.

Noteworthy

  • Pirates manager Don Kelly was suspended for one game. Bench coach Kristopher Negrón served as acting manager. RHP Chris Devenski was also suspended by MLB for two games.
  • This was the third time in the last seven meetings Arizona shut out Pittsburgh dating back to last season.
  • Former Pirates outfielder and coach Bob Skinner died at the age of 94. Skinner was art of the 1960 World Series champion team with Pittsburgh.
