The Pittsburgh Pirates are having a good 2026 season, especially compared to the expectations coming into the season.

They are currently 29-26, and just 4.5 games back of the NL Central lead. There’s a lot to like about this team, and there’s plenty of room for things to get even better from here.

One way would be buying at the MLB trade deadline. But, with the Pirates’ history, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they stood pat or sold at the deadline. However, Levi Weaver of The Athletic shared a prediction for the Pirates that is a bit different.

“But yes, I think the Pirates will be buyers,” Weaver writes. “Don’t worry, there’s time to read up on the concept between now and then.”

Weaver is predicting the Pirates to actually buy at this year’s trade deadline, something that would be very exciting for Pirates fans who haven’t seen their team act as buyers in some time.

Pirates predicted to buy at MLB trade deadline

The Pirates acting as buyers would be a big surprise considering how things have gone the last few years. Even with the offseason spending, buying at the trade deadline would be a bit of a shocker.

Pittsburgh’s Bob Nutting hasn’t been very aggressive in building the roster, but this year might be the time to shake things up. Konnor Griffin looks great, Brandon Lowe and Ryan O’Hearn are fun additions, and Paul Skenes is still elite.

If the Pirates could go out and acquire more help for the starting rotation, or a great designated hitter, they could go from frisky playoff contenders to a legitimate threat to win the NL Central.

This prediction coming true would be an incredible outcome for Pirates fans. They’ve sat through years of agonizing stagnation, and finally, this team could change the vibe by buying at the trade deadline.
