Rams, Chargers Assistant GMs Interviewing for Head GM Role with Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are still searching for a new general manager after firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in late January. The franchise has reportedly requested interviews with the assistant general managers of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.

The Vikings requested interviews with a total of six front office executives across the NFL, including Rams assistant general manager John McKay and Chargers assistant general manager Chad Alexander.

According to The Athletic, Minnesota also requested interviews with Terrance Gray of the Buffalo Bills, Nolan Teasley of the Seattle Seahawks, RJ Gillen of the San Francisco 49ers and Dave Ziegler of the Tennessee Titans.

Except for Ziegler, none of the five other candidates have ever served as a general manager for an NFL team.

McKay

McKay has spent 10 total years working for the Rams and was the franchise’s director of pro scouting for four years before earning a promotion to assistant GM in 2025.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell was the Rams’ offensive coordinator for two seasons in 2020 and 2021. He helped Los Angeles win Super Bowl LVI three days before becoming Minnesota’s head coach.

Therefore, McKay and O’Connell are familiar with each other, which could help McKay’s chances of getting hired.

Alexander joined the Chargers organization in 2024 alongside general manager Joe Hortiz. During the interview process for the role at the Chargers, Hortiz said he made it clear that Alexander would be his assistant general manager.

“Through all my interviews, it was, ‘Hey, if I get this job, I’m bringing him as my assistant GM.’ He was always the guy I had ticketed,” Hortiz told Chargers.com in December 2024.

“Chad was my first choice before I got this job. And there were a lot of reasons,” Hortiz said. “Twenty years of experience working with him … he was a no brainer.”

“Is he a friend? Yes,” Hortiz added. “He didn’t get hired though because he’s a friend. He was hired because of the confidence and the trust I have in him as an evaluator and leader.”

Prior to joining the Chargers, Alexander worked for the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.

The Vikings are not the only team that has expressed interest in hiring Alexander as a GM. The Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars interviewed Alexander in early 2025, and the Miami Dolphins interviewed Alexander in January.
