The Boston Red Sox played their best series of the year so far in Detroit this week, sweeping the Detroit Tigers in three games at Comerica Park.

Coming off a frustrating weekend at Fenway Park, the Red Sox took three straight from the Tigers, outscoring them 19-7 and matching their longest winning streak of the season.

Boston got lucky by avoiding Tarik Skubal in the series opener, as he was placed on the injured list before the game. Still, the Red Sox showed resilience by overcoming a multi-run deficit for the first time this year, winning 5-4 on Monday behind another gem from Payton Tolle in his first career win.

Boston teed off on Framber Valdez on Tuesday, scoring its second-most runs of the season with 10. That was more than enough run support for Brayan Bello, who snapped his three-game losing streak with seven innings of one-run ball in his best outing of the year.

The Red Sox’s pitching shone again in Wednesday’s finale. Sonny Gray was terrific in his return from the injured list with five scoreless innings, pitching Boston to a 4-0 victory and its first sweep since last August.

Not only was the finale the Red Sox’s fifth shutout win of the season, but it was also just their fourth win in franchise history where they struck out at least 15 times and had four or fewer hits.

Boston improved to 16-21 overall and 6-4 under Chad Tracy. The Red Sox are just two games out of a playoff spot in the American League as they return home for a seven-game homestand at Fenway Park, which starts on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
