When a Detroit Red Wings seventh round draft pick, the 201st selection, makes the NHL after playing only 13 games in the American Hockey League, he has beaten the odds,

When he plays the entire season and scores 13 goals and registers 30 points, he’s living a dream.

Then when he believes his hockey life cannot get better, Canadian officials call and offer him a spot on the Team Canada roster that will compete at the World Championships later this month in Switzerland.

Welcome to Emmitt Finnie’s world.

Finnie and Detroit Red Wings projected free agent Cam Talbot were both named to a quality Canadian team that includes Macklin Celebrini, John Tavares, Mark Scheifele, Robert Thomas and Mathew Barzal, Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard among others. This is a group that should compete for a medal.

Meanwhile, the Germans have announced that MoritzSeider will train with their team to assess his readiness to play in the tournament, which begins next week. Team officials are optimistic enough to already include Seider on their roster.

If you count Cam Talbot who is unlikely to be re-signed and Max Plante, a prize Detroit prospect, and presume Seider will play, the Red Wings may now have seven players at the World Championships.

The others: Lucas Raymond and Albert Johansson are playing for Sweden, while Justin Faulk and Plante will play for USA.

Finnie, 20, could benefit the most from the experience, particularly if Canada makes a run for a medal. The Red Wings are hoping the smooth skating forward can increase his scoring a bit next season.

They continue to be high on his potential.

“When he’s bringing (energy), which is 99% of the time, first-year player, he’s a big factor, a big influence on our team,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “The pace he plays with, how he closes on players with and without the puck and his ability to drive pucks to the net… to have put up the numbers he had is actually quite good.”
