Andrew Copp

(Editor’s Note: This is another installment of a player-by-player analysis of the Detroit Red Wings’ roster for the 2025-26 season. The emphasis is on how each player performed and their future in the organization. Today, we discuss Andrew Copp, who just completed his fifth season in Detroit.)

Age: 31 (32 on July 8)

Last season: Copp had nine goals and 34 assists for.a career-high 43 points

Contract status: Copp has one year left on a five-year deal signed in 2022; he becomes a free agent after the 2026-27 season. He’ll be paid $5.625 million.

Grade: B

Past

Born in Ann Arbor, Copp played for the National Team Development Program and the University of Michigan before being drafted by the Winnipeg Jets. After eight years with the Jets, Copp spent part of. season with the New York Rangers before signing with Detroit as a free agent in 2022.

Present

Copp had nine goals last season, but centering a line with Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane has been a role he has filled admirably.  Copp has flourished since Todd McLellan was named coach in late 2024. He is being asked to fill a second-line center role, when he would be a much more effective player if slotted in as a third-line center.

Future

Copp is an unrestricted free agent after the next season, and although his struggles at the beginning of his deal in Detroit led to some second-guessing, another strong effort will almost certainly lead to another contract, whether in Detroit or elsewhere. He’s also considered a positive force off the ice, too, which enhances his value.
